Not all tiles are meant for all applications. That is why The Porcelain and Enamel Institute have provided a rating system on tile hardness base on a scale of 1 through 5.

  • PEI Rating 1: No Foot Traffic. These tiles are rated for no foot traffic they can be used on walls or countertops and interior applications only
  • PEI Rating 2: Light Foot Traffic. These tiles are rated for residential bathroom floors and wall applications only.
  • PEI Rating 3: Light to Moderate Traffic. These tiles are rated for residential floor and wall applications.
  • PEI Rating 4: Moderate to Heavy Traffic. These tiles are rated for residential, medium commercial, and light industrial floor and wall applications.
  • PEI Rating 5: Heavy Traffic. These tiles are rated to be installed in all applications. You cannot get a tougher better performing tile.

Tile Trends
